Health, Illness and Blessings In Disguise

Asalamu alaikum everyone ✨

I’d like you to think back to a time when you were so ill that you struggled to have a normal day. Did you find it hard to smell, taste or move? Did you feel down or fatigued?

We have all experienced illness during our lives. But, how many of us have used our time of illness to reflect on the blessing of good health?

Health, which can be described as the state of physical and mental wellness and the absence of illness, is a blessing from Allah that many of us take for granted. Good health helps us to do the activities we carry out everyday, such as going to work and school. Without good health, we struggle to do these tasks with ease. Have you thanked Allah for the good health he has bestowed upon you?

We often have trouble seeing what is right beneath our noses, so to speak. When we are in good health, we forget what it is like to be ill. We forget that we are weak as human beings and that good health does not come from ourselves. It is a blessing from Allah.

We should try to make a habit of showing gratitude to Allah for our health because there are millions of people in the world who are suffering from illnesses that Allah protects us from. And when we are facing an illness, we should look to those who are suffering more than we are and be grateful for our situation. There are some poeple who live with complete body paralysis and others who cannot live without life support. Reflecting on this does not take away from our own suffering, but it gives us a perspective to help us to recognise blessings in disguise.

Below are some hadith that mention the reward of enduring illnesses.

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah Almighty will put His servant to trial by illness until his every sin is expiated.” (al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr 1548)

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “No calamity befalls a Muslim but that Allah expiates some of his sins because of it, even though it were the prick he receives from a thorn.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5640)

Verily, Allah Almighty says: When I put one of my faithful servants to trial and he praises Me despite his trial, he will rise from his bed free of sin like the day he was born from his mother. The Almighty Lord says: I have confined My servant and put him to trial, so he will be rewarded the same as he used to do when he was healthy.” (Musnad Ahmad 17118)

Seek Allah’s help, thank Him for the blessings you have and remember Him in times of ease and difficulty. Remember that the tests and trials we face serve the purpose of bringing us closer to Allah.

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever would be pleased for Allah to answer him during times of hardship and difficulty, let him supplicate often during times of ease.(Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3382)
